CRAFTSMAN COTTAGE Kitchen
This charming Craftsman Cottage kitchen renovation presented the unique challenge of designing a highly functional and visually cohesive space within a footprint of less than 100 square feet in a 1924 home. The client, an avid cook and baker, envisioned an English Cottage-inspired kitchen that could accommodate her love of cookbooks, plants, and culinary tools without sacrificing style or comfort. To achieve the client’s goals, several thoughtful and creative design choices were made, and Revival House was able to transform this compact space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing culinary haven.
With only two usable walls for cabinetry - due to multiple doorways, a window, and existing baseboard heat - efficiency and thoughtful space planning were essential. While inset cabinetry is often used in homes of this vintage, we opted for Decor's full overlay frameless cabinetry, in Edgecomb Gray, to maximize every inch of interior storage. The homeowner chose high-end Miele appliances, including a 30" induction range and a 24" column refrigerator/freezer. The narrow refrigerator/freezer provides space much-needed wall and base pantry pullouts for canned and dry goods storage. A workstation sink with a built-in cutting board expanded prep space in this tight layout. Additional custom features that maximized storage and organization included a two-tier cutlery drawer and a drawer-within-a-drawer system for storing pots, pans, lids, and containers. To allow as much natural light as possible and showcase the client's darling collection of drinkware, we designed an L-shaped cabinet around the chimney chase with glass doors, creating a charming and functional display for glasses, canisters, and greenery.
Corian quartz countertops and backsplash, in Calacatta Medallion, adorn the kitchen and add a moment of luxury. The Princeton sconce and the Norfolk semi-flush light fixture are both "new classics", fusing functional artistry with vintage simplicity, fitting in perfectly to this cottage kitchen. Four different hardware styles from Top Knobs come together artfully to create visual intrigue throughout the space. Refinishing the original wood floors was not an option, so we installed a brick-look porcelain tile in a herringbone pattern - a perfect nod to the English Cottage aesthetic.
Both, the inventive floor plan and the careful design selections, resulted is a cozy, character-filled kitchen that blends timeless design with smart, space-saving solutions. Every detail was carefully considered to honor the home’s history while creating a kitchen tailored to the client’s lifestyle and personal style.
