NATURAL contemporary REMODEL
WHISPERING PINES KITCHEN
Located in northern Wisconsin, this quintessential lodge-style home was in need of a kitchen update. While the exterior of this home still matched its wooded surroundings, the existing kitchen, dominated by dated knotty pine cabinets, hadn't been touched since the home was built. The challenge for our designer was to transform this tired 1970's kitchen by creating a space that was functional and up to date but also seamlessly integrated with the home's existing knotty pine walls, maintaining its beloved cabin-in-the-woods character.
The footprint of this kitchen changed very little since the layout functioned well for this multi-generational household. Creative use of the existing space gave the homeowner everything on their wish list. The entryway closet was transformed into a floor-to-ceiling pantry complete with bifold doors and integrated cabinetry lighting from top to bottom. The low-hanging pine beams were removed, and the ceiling was raised and painted a clean and refreshing white, setting the stage for the updated kitchen cabinetry. The visual impact of a higher ceiling gave this kitchen a substantial face lift, which allowed for taller wall cabinets, providing the homeowner with more storage options.
Custom knotty alder cabinets from Decor Cabinets were used in this kitchen design and finished with distressing details, including bird pecking, and a specially formulated caramel glaze for a lived-in look. This combination of wood species, distressing, and finish choice offered a calmer aesthetic with a nod to the original kitchen, all while complementing the surrounding rustic elements of this home, keeping its cabin charm.
To create a sense of openness and visual interest, decorative glass inserts were added to the upper wall cabinets—offering the perfect place to display cherished family heirlooms and keepsakes. Thoughtfully integrated lighting throughout the cabinetry helps transform what was once a dark, closed-in kitchen into a bright and inviting space.
State-of-the-art appliances make this kitchen a true chef’s dream. A panel-ready dishwasher blends seamlessly into the cabinetry for effortless cleanup, while the commercial-sized refrigerator and freezer provide ample storage—ideal for this multi-family space. And of course, no Northwoods kitchen is complete without a dedicated coffee and beverage center, cleverly tucked away to keep the space neat and clutter-free.
Venetian Cream by Corian Quartz was chosen for its perfect blend of elegance and practicality, serving as both the countertop and full-height backsplash. The formerly curved center island was reimagined as a stunning focal point, now featuring sleek waterfall edges that showcase the beauty of the quartz on both ends. To maintain a sense of warmth and familiarity, the existing woven leather bar stools were thoughtfully retained and reused.
Every design decision—from raising the ceiling to selecting custom knotty alder cabinetry and carefully chosen hardware—was thoughtfully curated to create a space that seamlessly blends modern functionality with rustic charm.
